Assessment of the contamination of marine fauna by chlordecone in Guadeloupe and Martinique (Lesser Antilles) ArchiMer
Dromard, Charlotte; Bodiguel, Xavier; Lemoine, Soazig; Bouchon-navaro, Yolande; Reynal, Lionel; Thouard, Emmanuel; Bouchon, Claude.
Chlordecone is an organochlorine pesticide, used in the Lesser Antilles from 1972 to 1993 to fight against a banana weevil. That molecule is very persistent in the natural environment and ends up in the sea with runoff waters. From 2003 to 2013, seven campaigns of samplings have been conducted to evaluate the level of contamination of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. The present study is the first assessment and the first comparison of the concentrations of chlordecone between marine areas, taxonomic groups, and ecological factors like trophic groups or preferential habitat of fish species. The four most contaminated marine areas are located downstream the contaminated rivers and banana plantations. Crustaceans seemed to be more sensitive to the...

Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) collected on the inner continental shelf of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Oceanographic Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I and II Biota Neotropica
Grohmann,Priscila Araci; Nogueira,Claudio do Carmo; Silva,Vera Maria Abud Pacífico da.
The Brazilian Navy (DHN/MB) commissioned a series of Oceanographic Operations covering almost the entire inner continental shelf of the country from the 1960s through the 1980s. Surveys provided geological data on the sea bottom and marine biota along the entire Brazilian coast. This report lists data on 15 hydroid species collected during Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I in 1979 and GEOCOSTA RIO II in 1986, at depths ranging from 25 to 89 m. Hydroids were obtained at two of 65 stations in Operation GEOCOSTA RIO I, each represented by one species: Aglaophenia rhynchocarpa Allman, 1877 and Plumularia strobilophora Billard, 1913. In Operation GEOCOSTA RIO II, hydroids were present at four of the 25 sampled stations. Fourteen species were recorded: Pennaria disticha...

Hydrothermal Vents: Oases at Depth ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
The synthesis of organic molecules in hydrothermal fluids raises the question of what role hydrothermal vents may have played in the emergence of life on Earth. These deep‐sea ecosystems were most likely protected from extreme conditions at the surface (meteor showers and ultraviolet radiation). Since the middle of the 19th century, scientists have questioned the position of deep‐sea animals in the evolution of marine fauna, in the hope to discover the missing link, i.e. the species or group that may have survived mass extinctions in this protected and stable environment. This chapter discusses the geology and geochemistry of hydrothermal systems, microbial chemosynthesis, symbioses and trophic chains, and fauna at different spatial scales. Fauna...
